San Sebastián Locavore Food Tour: Two Markets, One Experience

Are you one of those thinking that there is no better way to buy fresh food, feel the culture, find culinary jewels and absorb the essence of the local vibes? Let´s do it! But this time, apart from learning about our producers, we will be tasting so much food and drinks.

From the best Spanish charcuterie, to local cheeses. From the most homemade olives to the most premium olive oil. Let us explain you this amazing plan:

Let´s visit the Bretxa Market first, where we will go in the morning to feel the local vibe. You will see top charcuterie sellers, fresh fish stalls, dry cod, olive and oil shops and more!

Let´s do a premium tasting in some of these stops learning about the origin of these fresh products, mostly basque and some spanish or Japan. Yes! We will also be comparing the Spanish and Japanese Wagyus.

Our vendors are more than that for us, they are part of our everyday shopping, they have a name: Javi, Maxi, Lola, Mikel, Ramoni, Patxi, Manuel, Aurelia, Ioritz, Ainhoa,…

After Bretxa Old Town Market, we will stroll the centric street for about 10 minutes to reach the second market, the MERCADO SAN MARTIN.

San Martin market was built in 1884 and  it´s been renovated recently and it looks gorgeous. Very clean with nice stalls and best locavore produce.

Let´s meet the farmers first, selling their local seasonal produce, some just cut, some peeled in a plastic bag to make our work easier, fresh picked mushrooms or confit of artichokes or duck. There are several hidden corners here, so we will discover them and taste some of them while we talk with the farmer.

Depending on the day, we can taste some fresh made dairy called “mamia” (curd), the most popular local appetizer or desert with some local organic honey, or sometimes we move to eat some great smoked ham produced a few miles away.

After this starting, we will have a 5 Basque Wine pairing with more local produce. It will be a great tasting to learn about Basque Wine Regions and Basque flavors such as tuna, anchovy, chorizo and lots of cheese.

After this experience, we will go to have a cherry on the top, tasting one of the tastiest tiramisu or passion fruit cakes made by one of the most famous local bakers.

After this culinary journey, you will feel full of local feeling and a full stomach.

If you do not feel like going for a siesta, we offer you the best walking city tour just  a few blocks away at 15:15.
