Way of Saint James - “among vineyards”

Marvel at the stunning Basque coast, take a scenic train ride, and meander through picturesque vineyards. Drink in the beauty of Zarautz and Getaria, the birthplaces of Balenciaga and Elkano. Wrap up your day with a visit to the medieval village of Getaria and savor a delightful 3-course meal at a cozy local restaurant. Get set for an unforgettable journey!

Our Way starts in Orio:

We begin our “Camino” walk with a 25-minute ride to Orio, a charming fishermen village famed for its vibrant summer regatta rowing events. As we meander, we’ll share captivating insights into the rich history of the Camino and how its significance has evolved over the centuries.

Visiting the town of Zarautz:

Once we climb Talaimendi hill, get ready for killer views of Zarautz, famous for its golden sand beach and past royal vacationers.

After a cool beach promenade and exploring the old town, we’ll dive into our second hike. We’ll follow a Roman path through vineyards, reaching the top of Santa Barbara hill (130 meters high) for a breather and stunning views.

“Among vineyards”:

Continuing our journey on the Saint James Way, the remainder of the walk is a pleasant descent, treating us to stunning views of Txakoli wine heavens and vineyards, leading us straight to the medieval fishing village of Getaria.

The descent to Getaria is not only easy but offers spectacular views of the surroundings, including those famous Txakoli wine producers.

Getaria fishermen medieval village:

Once we hit Getaria, you’ll get the lowdown on its famous figures like Cristobal Balenciaga, the fashion icon, and Juan Sebastian Elkano, the navigator who first circumnavigated  the globe in the 16th century.

Getaria is a grilled fish heaven, and you’ll spot chefs doing the magic on outdoor charcoal grills. We’ll check out Elkano’s monument, stroll the cobbled streets, visit the city hall, and peek into the 15th-century Gothic church of San Salvador.

“Port to table” Lunch with your guide:

Now, get ready to dive into a hearty fisherman’s lunch. Think fresh salad, locally caught fresh grilled fish, and a toast with the crisp local white wine, Txakoli. Your guide will explain the in and out of every dish for a full experience.

After this epic day, we’ll head back to San Sebastian by  private transport.

This was a highlight of our trip to Spain! Telmo was a fantastic guide, extremely personable and knowledgeable about food and wine. Being a local of Zarautz he was able to tell us all about the towns and history making it very interesting and entertaining. Visiting the winery outside of Getaria was so beautiful! Telmo even helped us get lunch reservations at an outstanding restaurant in the town . We highly recommend this experience!

This was a fabulous day from start to finish. The local knowledge exceeded expectations. We loved the location of the tour. Telmo was super helpful and a happy guide. He loved to speak with everyone. He was enthusiastic to share his local wine, landmarks and traditional experiences. The Camino walk was a great way to balance out the day along with the train trip, market and winery stops. Would strongly recommend this tour to our friends and family.
